5:03 pm - The Pogues | 2009 East Coast tour

I was lucky to be able to shoot four shows for The Pogues (Atlanta, DC, and twice in Boston) over the past couple of weeks. Here are a few of my favorites; you can see more on my music site and Flickr.

This was the first time I'd shot at any of the three venues. Of the three I liked the 9:30 Club in Washington the best--nice low stage, pretty decent lighting, fairly wide pit. The Tabernacle in Atlanta had a nice pit but the stage was incredibly high; very difficult to see over (and I'm about 5'9" in my boots). The new House of Blues in Boston was pretty nice to shoot from and a *great* place to watch. There is not a bad seat or blocked sightline anywhere in the whole venue.

Click any for large. Additional images and writing at meowhousemedia.com.

9:29 am - Ludo & a question

I just posted a bunch of pictures from a recent Ludo/Relient K show that I shot. Ludo is nothing but fun, and it definitely shows in the photos. Here's one, but click on it to see more at my blog:

(there are also a few at my Flickr)

And, a question for all - I want to write another tutorial-type blog entry (such as the 1-minute edit blog and the wide angle tips blog that I did). I have a few ideas on possible topics, like how to write an action to watermark your images or how to alter individual colors in a shot, but is there something else that anyone wants to know? I definitely take requests!

3:01 pm - More Nine Inch Nails

Yes this is another Nine Inch Nails post. I unexpectedly got another photo pass for them for the 28 Nov show in Rapid City and so I was able to shoot a second night. There was much less smoke this time and I think overall I got a larger percentage of keepers. I did have the same problem with my second body that I did in Worcester: it worked fine backstage and did not work in the pit. Someone told me later that maybe the strobes they use affect the camera sensor somehow? It took two pictures and then wouldn't work anymore. I had thought perhaps the card/battery/lens that I used on that body in Worcester were faulty so I changed them all and still had the same problem in Rapid City. Pretty bummed about that. But I did get to use my new Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 for the first time, plus my 70-200mm f2.8 so without all the excess of smoke I was *finally* able to get some decent shots of Alessandro (keyboards) and Josh (drums), who are a lot farther back on the stage.

I've only put up three so far but they'll be on my Flickr, my regular Web site, and the nin.com galleries as I get them processed.

So here's the first one I did of Trent Reznor, which I like, but I really wish we could shoot a few songs with slightly more interesting lighting. We also got the same three songs for this show that I had shot in Worcester, but what am I gonna do, complain? Second NIN photo pass in one tour! Best Thanksgiving weekend ever.

So here's the picture. More later.

11:20 am - Nine Inch Nails @ Worcester

I shot Nine Inch Nails at the 9 Nov show in Worcester, MA. I did final processing on a lot of them in B&W because during the three songs, there was an incredible amount of smoke and everything was whited out for most of the allotted time. I could barely see the two guys in the back (Alessandro Cortini and Josh Freese). I didn't get one decent shot of either of them. So the smoke gave me problems and then, the horror of all photographers, my second body with a wide-angle lens on it decided to not work the second I got into the pit. It worked backstage--I had tested it several times--and once out front it would not fire. THANK GOD it was my backup body, not my main one. We also were told to bring absolutely nothing from backstage that we couldn't carry on our person, so changing lenses was difficult as my bag is not a wearable one. I had to stuff one lens down my pants to have a place to put it. So anyway, because of the smoke and because the colors in the background were not overly awesome for me for most of those particular songs, I figured I'd convert some to B&W and go for drama that way rather than through color-pop.

Here is one B&W, which I thought was kind of a meh picture, but it seems to be very popular based on Flickr views and comments elsewhere. Probably because it's the one shot where Trent Reznor was looking right into the camera. A color shot is under the cut (warning, it's big), full set in progress including P&S shots from Manchester and Atlantic City is here.

Sorry I can never get these fucking cuts to work.  Am trying again, so sorry.

Relient K Edit

I posted a blog entry to my concert photography blog about what a typical edit involves for me. (go HERE to see how I edit - I don't do much, each photo usually takes under a minute)

Between the blog and the affiliated photo that I posted on Flickr, I've learned some interesting things about how other concert photographers edit their photos. I'm really fascinated now... how do YOU edit your photos? How long does it take? Any tips/tricks? Any before and after shots?

This years Warped Tour was a relatively mild event... a few good bands, though. Plenty of enthusiastic kids. I'm sure a good time was had by all! Click on the photo to visit flickr and check out the rest of what I shot today.

Stay tuned to the Alternative Press website and upcoming issues of the mag to see these images in print!
